The Polar Cusp Seen by Cluster

چکیده

The investigation of the magnetospheric polar cusps was one main objectives Cluster mission. four satellites have crossed those regions numerous times over years and, with their suitable instrumentation, favorable orbits, and unique multipoint measurements, many aspects cusp been unveiled. first is its highly dynamic nature. With satellites, whatever altitude thus configuration, spatial/temporal ambiguity has lifted a completely new insight into motion evolution transient small-scale structures within it given. Second, high or exterior cusp, properties dynamics, magnetic energetic particles observed within, boundary magnetosheath were characterized in number case studies on statistical basis. Third, observations brought fresh eye reconnection process at magnetopause, including location spatio-temporal variability. Finally, complete payload particle, field wave detectors made possible to treat as plasma physics laboratory progress our understanding wave-particle interaction turbulence cusp. We no choice but note that extremely successful for all these matters.

Plasma Transfer Event Seen by Cluster

A plasma transfer event (PTE) was observed by Cluster C3 on 8 March, 2003, beginning at 0707 UT. For over a minute CIS saw, inside the magnetopause, a burst of solar wind plasma with a density up to 0.8 cm, a factor of 4 higher than was observed before and after. PEACE showed field aligned fluxes at energies up to 500 eV. At higher energies from 1 to 40 keV the fluxes had a pancake distribution...

Magnetopause current as seen by Cluster

The four-spacecraft, magnetic field measurements on Cluster can be combined to produce an accurate determination of the electric current in the magnetopause boundary during stable magnetopause crossings. For events that are planar on the scale of the spacecraft configuration, the thickness of the current layer can be accurately estimated from its magnetic profile at each spacecraft and the corr...

The Galaxy Cluster Abell 3581 as seen by Chandra

We present results from an analysis of a Chandra observation of the cluster of galaxies Abell 3581. We discover the presence of a point-source in the central dominant galaxy which is coincident with the core of the radio source PKS 1404-267. The emission from the intracluster medium is analysed, both as seen in projection on the sky, and after correcting for projection effects, to determine the...

ESR mapping of polar-cap patches in the dark cusp

[1] We present the first ever measurement of the full thermal plasma properties, of an ionospheric patch in full darkness in the noon region where patches are believed to form. Further these data present the first experimental evidence for the Lockwood and Carlson class of mechanisms for forming patches by plasma injection. These data were possible only because of a new measurement capability w...
